PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH

Introduction

We must pay great attention to our psychological health.

The human organism does not merely include a physical body, but a mind and emotional system, as well. Some would go even further and posit that we include a "soul" or something like it. Perhaps, alternatively, it is more accurate to describe these things not as part of the body, but more as functions of the body; philosophical and theological debate will continue regarding whether things are components of our bodies, or functions of our bodies, which is to say, whether such things as "mind" is a thing separate from body, or simply a function or activity of the body. Whatever the ultimate determination, if there ever is one, it is clear to most of us that these things, whatever their nature, must be nourished and kept in good health, possessing their own set of requirements for health. Thus are we familiar with phrases and the ideas behind them such as "mental health," "psychological health," "spiritual health," and "emotional health."

I will here use, properly, I think, the descriptive phrase "psychological health" as shorthand for psychological, emotional, and spiritual health, since arguably our emotional health (and our spiritual health if one adheres to this notion) ultimately comes from, or is entertained in, the mind. The point is that along with caring for the needs obvious to the physical body we must care for the needs of the mind and spirit. These needs will vary somewhat from individual to individual, but common elements probably include:

  • Career or trade, or other means of producing regular income, without which almost every element necessary for psychological and even physical health will be difficult to obtain.

  • Further, a career or trade or other means of producing regular income that is genuinely enjoyable for us, that provides some reasonable measure of self-actualization. meaning fulfillment of interests and congruity with our intellect, temperament, and personality.

  • Proper care of the physical body, itself, as without this the functions of our brain will be compromised and it is unlikely that psychological health will result.

  • Relationship of support of some kind from other people. For most of us this will include the giving and receiving of love of a romantic variety.

  • Basic orientation of love from everyone around us. If we are in continual conflict with others any real measure of psychological health will likely not occur. Similarly, if we feel deeply that those around us, our community and larger society, maintain no care or concern for us at all, psychological health will likely elude us, too.

  • Persons of a religious orientation will likely include here one or more relevant considerations such as quality of their relationship with God, or degree to which they are genuinely and effectively living their professed religious principles.
